How to Fix My Admiral Washing Machine That Will Not Agitate or Spin

Abigail O'Connell

Your Admiral top-load washing machine may not agitate or spin for a variety of reasons. Spinning and agitation is necessary for the washing machine to properly clean your laundry. Problems with spinning and agitation are often easily solved by following some simple troubleshooting techniques.

Does Not Agitate

  1. Unplug the washing machine from the outlet. Check the appropriate circuit breaker located in the main circuit panel of your home. All circuit breakers should be turned to the ON position. If the washer's circuit breaker is in the OFF position, switch it to the ON position.

  2. Make sure the washing machine lid is closed completely and there are no visible gaps between the appliance and the lid. The machine will not agitate if the lid is open.

  3. Reinsert the washing machine plug into the electrical outlet. Turn the control dial to the normal cycle and restart the washing machine. The washing machine may pause for a moment, which is normal. Wait 1 minute. The washing machine should start again and agitate normally.

Does Not Spin

  1. Unplug the washing machine from the outlet. Check the appropriate circuit breaker located in the main circuit panel of your home. All circuit breakers should be turned to the ON position. If the washer's circuit breaker is in the OFF position, switch it to the ON position.

  2. Check the drain hoses behind the washing machine. Make sure the hoses are not kinked and straighten them if they are.

  3. Replug the washing machine into the electrical outlet. Close the lid. Make sure the lid is completely closed and there are no visible gaps between the washing machine and the lid. The washing machine will not spin if the lid is not completely closed.

  4. Check the amount of suds caused by the laundry detergent. If there are too many suds, the washing machine will lock and will not spin. Start the washing machine at a normal cycle and rewash the laundry load without detergent. For future loads, use the recommended amount of a low-sudsing detergent.

Warning

Always unplug the washing machine before beginning any troubleshooting techniques to avoid electrical shock.
