The Best Way to Paint Wood Furniture

Save

While painting wood furniture might sound like a simple process, you do need to properly prepare the furniture to achieve the best possible results. Take your time with the project and give paint plenty of time to dry. The quality of paint used will also have a significant effect on the final appearance of your wood furniture, so choose brands your trust or those with good reviews, rather than the cheapest paint available.

Things You'll Need

  • 220 grit sandpaper
  • White vinegar
  • Water
  • Clean rag
  • Primer
  • Paintbrush
  • 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper
  • Spray bottle
  • Towel
  • Latex paint
  • Polyurethane
  • 600 grit wet/dry sandpaper
  • Remove all hardware from the furniture and set it in a safe place so it will not be lost.

  • Sand the entire surface of the furniture with 220 grit sandpaper.

  • Clean the furniture with a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and water applied with a clean rag. Wipe away all dust created during sanding and any dirty or greasy spots on the furniture.

  • Apply an alcohol- or shellac-based primer to the furniture with a paintbrush. Wait for the layer of primer to dry completely before you continue.

  • Sand the dry primer with 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper used wet. Wet the sandpaper under running water before you begin sanding, and use a spray bottle to keep the sandpaper wet throughout the sanding process. Dry the furniture with a clean towel after sanding.

  • Paint the furniture with latex paint in the color and finish of your choice. Add a second coat of paint when the first coat dries.

  • Apply a clear, water-based polyurethane over the dry paint with a paintbrush.

  • Wet sand the dry polyurethane with 600 grit wet/dry sandpaper used wet to create a smooth finish. Wipe away the water and dry the furniture with a clean towel.

  • Reattach the hardware you removed from the furniture in Step 1.
