The Ford Focus is a four-cylinder economy car that was first available as a 2000 model and was still being sold new as of 2010 with minor changes. The Focus utilizes a transverse-mounted engine that drives the front wheels. The engine is attached to the vehicle’s unitized steel body with two rubber-lined motor mounts. Motor mounts keep engine vibrations from entering the passenger compartment. If your car has a shaking sensation at idle, you may have a bad motor mount.
Things You'll Need
- 2 wheel chocks
- Floor jack
- 2 jack stands
- Metric socket set
- Ratchet wrench
- Flat-blade screwdriver
- Replacement motor mount
Place wheel chocks under the rear tires. Raise the front of the car with a floor jack and place jack stands under each frame rail. Lower the jack.
Crawl under the car. Place the floor jack under the engine and raise it until the lifting pad makes contact with the bottom of the engine.
Locate the two-piece motor mount, which is bolted to the rear of the engine in three places and to the vehicle's body with one bolt. Remove the three bolts from the engine with a socket and ratchet. Place the bolts aside. Pull the bracket from the engine and place it aside.
Now remove the bolt from the mount that attaches to the car’s body with a socket and ratchet. Pry the rubber mount away from the body with a flat-blade screwdriver. Pull the mount from the body and discard it.
Connect the new motor mount to the original bracket you removed in Step 3 by loosely placing the original retaining bolt through the mounting holes in the new motor mount and into the bracket.
Push the new mount into place with the rubber bushing facing downward. Replace the original retaining bolt through the mount and into the vehicle's body and tighten with a socket and ratchet.
Replace the two remaining bolts through the bracket that attaches to the engine block and tighten them, along with the bolt your installed loosely in Step 5, with a socket and ratchet.
Remove the floor jack from the engine. Raise the vehicle as in Step 1 and remove the jack stands. Lower the floor jack and remove it.
Tips & Warnings
- Replacing the front engine mount can be done from the engine compartment of your Focus. Place a floor jack under the engine and raise it until it makes contact with the bottom of the engine. Remove the coolant tank holding bolts in the engine compartment and move the tank aside to reveal the motor mount. Remove the mount from the car body with a 19mm socket and ratchet. Remove the two bolts that attach the mount to the engine with a 15mm socket. Remove the motor mount. Place the motor mount in a vise and remove the engine bracket from it with a 19mm socket. Attach the new motor mount to the original bracket and remove it from the vise. Install the motor mount assembly in the reverse order.
