How to Repair a GE Ceramic Cooktop

A repair kit can help hide damage on a glass-ceramic cooktop.

Your glass-ceramic cooktop, made out of a heat-resistant glass, will continue to look like new after many years of use. This durable glass top will withstand normal wear and tear, but is still prone to scratches and chips if abused. There is no true repair for the glass-ceramic cooktop except replacement, which is expensive. Repairing the glass-ceramic cooktop with a porcelain-ceramic repair kit, while not an exact match, will provide a nearly invisible repair. The repair kit will consist of two separate components, a filler/hardener compound and an enamel spray. The enamel spray will approximate the ceramic glaze of your existing cooktop surface.

Things You'll Need

• Container
• Wood spatula
• 180-grit course sandpaper
• 320-grit fine sandpaper
• Denatured alcohol
• Lint-free cloths
• Masking tape
• Polishing spray

Instructions

Application of Filler/Hardener Compound

1. Place a 2-inch bead of filler paste in a container. Mix in a small amount of the hardener using a ratio of 20:1.

2. Apply the filler/hardener compound to the scratched or chipped area using a wood spatula. Fill in the chip completely.

3. Wait one hour for the compound to harden.

4. Sand the patch, using the course sandpaper and light pressure, to shape and contour the patch to the surrounding area. Do not scratch the cooktop surface surrounding the patch.

5. Use the fine sandpaper to smooth and feather in the edges of the patch. You want the patched area to feel seamless to the touch.

Application of Enamel Spray

1. Wipe the area clean of sanding dust using denatured alcohol and a lint-free cloth.

2. Mask the cooktop controls, trim and adjacent countertop with masking tape.

3. Hold the enamel spray can 5 to 6 inches from the surface and apply over the patch with a short stroking motion. Apply several light coats, briefly allowing the spray to dry between coats. Clean the nozzle of the spray tip with a clean cloth between coats to avoid splatters.

4. Allow the repair to cure for 48 hours. Do not use the cooktop or allow the sprayed area to get wet until completely cured.

5. Polish the repair with a polishing spray and clean cloth to bring out the glaze to match luster of the surrounding cooktop surface.

Tips & Warnings

• Apply the filler compound and enamel spray at temperatures above 60 degrees.

• To ensure good adherence of the patch, clean the surface with denatured alcohol to remove soap scum and grease.

• Do not use abrasive cleansers or solvents on the repaired area.

• The finished repair, safe to approximately 350 degrees, will be suitable for most cooktop repairs. Do not apply patch over or next to the burners where the temperature exceeds 350 degrees.
