How to Unlock the Steering Wheel in a Dodge Caravan

The steering wheel in a Dodge Caravan can become unintentionally locked if you turn the steering wheel and do not let the wheel come to rest before shutting off the ignition. This is called "torque lock." Unfortunately, this is often confused with a malfunctioning steering wheel or wheel lock. Before you take your vehicle in for service, try to unlock the steering wheel first.

Instructions

    • 1

Put the key into the ignition.

    • 2

Shimmy the steering wheel back and forth while you turn the ignition key.

    • 3

Turn the steering wheel hard in the direction that the tires are facing (to relieve stress on the steering wheel lock) and then turn the ignition key if shimmying the steering wheel does not work. This will unlock the steering wheel.
