Turn the watch over, and set it on a soft surface to protect the watch face.

Look at the case back to determine if it has a smooth back with a notch on the side (snap back) or if it has several small slots on the back (screw back).

Remove a snap back case by inserting the blade of a small flat tool, such as a small standard screwdriver, in the notch between the case back and the watch. Gently pry the tool under the case back to lift it off the watch.

Remove a screw back case by using the screwdriver to turn the notches counterclockwise and lift the case back off. Some screw back cases require a case wrench, which is a special tool with small metal tips that insert into the slots at the same time and then can be turned counterclockwise to open the case back. Case wrenches are available at most watch repair stores or can be ordered online at websites such as WatchMaterial.com.

Note that removing the back of a waterproof watch may render it no longer waterproof due to potential damage to the seals and gaskets that surround the case back.
