How to Make a Wood Shoe Rack
Something as simple as a shoe rack can clean up the clutter in your closet immensely. Shoe racks are a simple woodworking project that you can do with the whole family. Crafting a shoe rack from wood is not expensive and by making your own, you are creating something that is durable and easy to place exactly where you want it.
Things You'll Need
- Measuring tape
- Pen and paper
- 2 poplar boards, 1/2-inch thick by 6-inch wide
- 2 poplar boards, 1/2-inch thick by 3-inch wide
- Saw
- Paint or stain
- 4 "L" brackets
- Marker
- 16 wood screws, 1/2-inch
- Screwdriver
- Drill
- 1/8-inch drill bit
- 16 drywall anchors, #6 to #8 size (if applicable)
- Hammer
- 16 screws, #6 size, 1 1/2-inch

Measure the available space for your shoe rack with the measuring tape and write down the measurements.

Measure all of your boards to fit the measurements of your space. Cut them to size with the saw.

Paint or stain the boards whatever color you choose and wait for them to dry completely. It's best to paint or stain them and let them dry overnight.

Measure and mark 3 inches from each end of the boards.

Attach the "L" brackets to the boards using the 1/2-inch wood screws where you marked them.

Use the "L" brackets of the top 3-inch shelf as a guide to mark where you should drill holes in the wall.

Drill a starter hole for your drywall anchors over each mark.

Hammer an anchor into each starter hole until it is flush with the wall.

Attach the 3-inch shelf to the wall using four #6 screws. The top of the first row of the rack is done.

Measure 2 inches below this shelf all the way across.

Use one of the 6-inch boards as a guide and mark the spots for the starter holes using the "L" bracket holes.

Drill four starter holes for the drywall anchors.

Hammer an anchor into each hole.

Attach the 6-inch shelf to the wall with #6 screws. The first rack is complete. Insert the toes of your shoes between the two shelves. To build a second row, measure and mark 6 inches below the second shelf and repeat Steps 1 through 14.
