How to Install an Ignition Switch in a 1983 Chevy C-10
Replacing the ignition switch in your 1983 Chevy C-10 pickup presents a few challenges. Mounted on the steering column, the ignition switch in this truck is shielded by the brake pedal assembly and bracket, and is not accessible directly from under the dash. The steering column must be lowered from the dash for access to the ignition switch. Nevertheless, this repair project is still well within the average weekend mechanic’s skill level and requires only basic hand tools to complete.
Things You'll Need
- 3/8-inch drive socket set
- ¼-inch drive socket set
- Metric wrench set
- Screwdriver set

1
Remove the dash trim panel, located below the steering column, using a Phillips head screwdriver. Locate the four 9/16-inch nuts that attach the steering column bracket to the dash and remove them using a 9/16-inch socket and socket wrench. A long extension on the socket wrench will make removing the two rear nuts easier. Lower the steering column carefully until it is supported by the driver's side front seat.

2
Turn the ignition key to the “Off-Unlocked” position. Remove the two 5/16-inch nuts and the two 3/8-inch nuts that secure the ignition switch and high beam switch to the steering column. Pry the actuator rod from the recess in the bottom of the switch using a flat blade screwdriver. Unplug the switch from the electrical connector and discard the old switch.

Place the new switch into the "Off-Unlocked" position by moving the slide down into the second notch. Install the switch by slipping the actuator rod into the recess on the bottom of the switch and attaching it to the steering column using the original screws. Test the adjustment of the switch, before replacing the steering column, by turning the ignition switch to the "Start" position. Loosen and slide the switch up the column slightly until the engine starts when the key is in the "Start" position. Install the high beam switch using the original 5/16-inch nuts.

Raise the steering column into place in the dash bracket and bolt it securely to the bracket using the original bolts. Check the ignition switch adjustment one final time then reinstall the lower dash trim panel.

Tips & Warnings
Using screws that are too long to attach the ignition switch to the steering column can prevent the steering column from collapsing when an accident occurs.
