A swimming pool skimmer works by drawing leaves, grass and other debris into the skimmer basket before they have a chance to sink to the bottom of the pool. Instructions

    • 1

      Turn off the pool pump.

    • 2

Remove the box that covers the skimmer.

    • 3

Add a few drops of red dye into the water near the skimmer box. If the colored water flows through the seam in the skimmer box, you have found your leak.

    • 4

Knead pool putty with your hands for a few minutes until it becomes pliable and easy to work with. Press the putty into the seam around the skimmer, and smooth it out with your fingers. Allow it to set for about half an hour.

Tips & Warnings

  • When you're checking for a leak, the water level must be at least 1 inch above where the pool wall and skimmer box meet.

  • Other common leak areas are near the return and vacuum fittings.
