Painting a Landscape on Glass

One of the easiest ways for artistically challenged people to create beautiful paintings is to use a sheet of glass as the canvas. You can cover an image such as a landscape with the glass panel and use it as a guide for the painting or use it as a template to trace an outline. Or, combine the elements of individual images to create a distinctive painting. Art supply stores sell special paints designed to adhere to glass. Use glass paints if you prefer a translucent effect and enamel paints if you prefer an opaque image.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean both sides of the glass panel with glass cleaner. Clean the side of the panel that you intend to paint on with rubbing alcohol.

    • 2

Place the desired landscape image on a flat work surface. Holding the glass panel by the edges, place it on top of the desired section of the image that you wish to trace. If you are using only one image, make sure that the glass panel covers the area that you wish to paint. Be careful not to touch the front of the panel. If you do get fingerprints on the face of the glass, clean it again with rubbing alcohol.

    • 3

Trace the outline of the landscape background with a glass paint pen to match the glass paint color for the section. For example, if you are tracing the skyline in a meadow landscape, use a blue or a green grass pen to draw the horizon line. If your landscape involves a snow capped mountain range, trace the outline of the mountain tops with a white or sky-blue glass paint pen.

    • 4

Fill in between the outlines with the appropriate glass paint colors. Begin painting at the painted lines and work up or down, depending on the landscape. If you outlined the mountain peaks in sky blue, begin painting the sky section of the landscape up from the blue lines. If you outlined the horizon line separating the meadow from the sky in green, begin painting down from the green lines.

    • 5

Add elements such as flowers or trees to the foreground of the landscape after the background paint is dry. Place the images with the desired elements beneath the glass, trace them with a paint pen, and then fill in with color.

    • 6

Bake the painted glass panel in an oven according to the paint manufacturer's directions. Some enamel paints do not need baking.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can use decorative acrylic painting techniques to create a landscape painting on glass. Substitute the acrylic paint for glass or enamel paint.
