DIN sizing for car stereos is a common unit of measurement for stereo sizing. Single DIN stereos measure 2 inches by 7 inches while the double DIN units are twice as tall. Standard stereos are single DIN. The stereos that have in-dash equalizers or other components attached to the stereo are double DIN. Removal of car stereos in Ford and Mazda vehicles (as well as some Mercedes and Volvo models) requires the use of DIN removal keys. These "U" shaped devices are used to extract the stereos without having to disrupt the dash panels that surround the stereo mounting dock. DIN removal keys can be purchased through the dealership or retail car audio outlets.
Things You'll Need
- DIN removal keys
Squeeze the prongs of the DIN removal keys to align with the removal key holes on either side of the stereo's face.
Insert the keys into the holes until they lock into place. The curved part of the keys will be left outside of the stereo.
Place your fingers into the curved portion of the keys and pull outward; the key on the left pulled to the left, the right key pulled to the right.
Pull the stereo from the dashboard while maintaining the outward tension on the keys. The stereo will slide from the dashboard.
Tips & Warnings
- The DIN removal keys work for single and double DIN stereos. To install the stereo, it is unnecessary to use the keys. The keys engage the spring-loaded catch on either side of the stereo. When sliding the stereo into the dock, the two mechanisms will snap into place once the unit is pushed in far enough to engage the locking mechanisms.
