Discard the ice and restart the ice-making process if the ice tastes like plastic. Typically, this occurs with a new refrigerator or after installation of an ice maker. You may have to dump the ice several times to remove the plastic taste.

Cover food containers in the refrigerator and freezer tightly. Opened containers release odors and strong smells will absorb into the ice. After sealing containers and discarding old food, clean the refrigerator to remove any lingering smells. Discard the ice and let the tray re-fill.

Install or replace the water filter. Water often has impurities that cause odor, such as chlorine, and a filter removes the impurities and therefore any bad smell and taste. Water typically reaches the refrigerator through a line attached to a sink's water supply. The water line feeds the refrigerator's water dispenser and ice dispenser. Follow manufacturer's recommendation on when to change the filter--approximately every six months.
