How to Date the Year of Manufacture of a Marlin


John Marlin began producing firearms during the post Civil War years in New Haven, Connecticut. Through the years, Marlin Firearms has undergone many changed under the leadership of several individuals. The company bought Harrington and Richardson in 2000 and was subsequently purchased by Remington in 2007. With the years of production and interest from shooters and collectors alike, the date of manufacture is often sought out.

  • Writing paper
  • Envelope
  • Pen
  • Tracing paper
  • Pencil
  • Gather information that is unique to the Marlin firearm. Locate the serial number, gun model number, chambered caliber and any unique stampings or markings. Note the information in a clear and organized manner on a piece of paper.

  • Copy any unique symbols or markings onto tracing paper to be included with the information. Place the paper over the marking and rub the side of a pencil over the paper to produce a negative image of the marking.

  • Provide any additional information that is known regarding about the specific gun. Place and date of purchase, ownership, and any other historical information should be included in a legible manner.

  • Place the firearm information and tracing, if included, in an envelope and seal shut. Address the envelope to the Marlin Firearms Company (see reference).

  • Consider also submitting the firearm information to the Cody Firearms Museum. The museum is part of the Buffalo Bill Historical Center.
