How to Build a Church Out of Paper

Save

Origami, the Japanese art of paper folding, can be used to create a variety of animals and buildings. A church is a moderately advanced item that requires some complex folds. However, the project is easy enough that it can be handled by older children. Ideal for Christmas or other religious holidays, a paper church activity encourages children to play quietly and independently while using basic skills. Create some additional origami buildings to form a paper village.

Things You'll Need

  • Paper square
  • Place the origami paper with the colored side down. Fold the paper in half lengthwise and open. Fold it in half diagonally, and open. Fold it in the opposite diagonal, and open.

  • Fold the paper in half lengthwise again. Fold the rectangle in half to form a square. Bend the top of the square downward to form a triangle. Open the triangle and press the center crease inward to flatten it. Repeat on the opposite side.

  • Bend the lower points of the triangle upward to meet the center point. Unfold. Repeat on the other triangle.

  • Lift up the right flap and open it. Flatten the top downward to create a small square shape. Repeat on the left side. Repeat on the other triangle.

  • Fold the right flat to the left side, and fold the edge in on itself so that it touches the center crease. Fold the flap back to the right side. Repeat with the left side. Flip the paper over and repeat on the opposite side.

  • Turn the upper inside corners downward.

  • Open the flaps under the bent corners and flatten the corner downward to form the front of the church. Lift the triangle created between these openings upward to form the entrance to the church.
