How to Add Transmission Fluid to a 2002 F150 Automatic

Save

Ford equipped the 2002 model-year F-150 with a four-speed automatic transmission. Fluid inside the transmission hydraulically controls the transmission's functions. A proper fluid level is necessary in order for the transmission to function as intended. Between service intervals, check the transmission's fluid level and add more fluid if the level falls below the proper operating level as indicated on the transmission's dipstick.

Things You'll Need

  • Clean rag
  • Transmission funnel
  • Mercon or Mercon V automatic transmission fluid (ATF)
  • Drive the truck about 20 miles, then park it on a level surface. Set the parking brake. Depress the brake pedal, then move the gearshift into each gear in turn. Put the gearshift into "Park." Leave the engine running.

  • Open the hood and locate the transmission dipstick on the passenger's side of the engine compartment either to the right of the battery or forward of the firewall.

  • Grasp the dipstick and pull it out of the dipstick tube. Wipe the dipstick with a clean rag, then re-insert it into the tube. Press the dipstick into the tube until it is fully seated, then pull the stick out again.

  • Observe the end of the dipstick and note the level of fluid in the transmission. Add transmission fluid only if the level indicates it is low. The "Add" mark is either written on the stick or it is designated by the small hole in the stick closest to the tip.

  • Insert the end of the funnel into the dipstick tube. Add 1/2 pint of transmission fluid. Remove the funnel from the dipstick tube.

  • Depress the brake pedal, then move the gearshift into each gear in turn. Put the gearshift into "Park." Leave the engine running. Recheck the fluid level with the dipstick.

  • Repeat Steps 3 through 6 until the fluid level is above the "Add" mark on the dipstick.

Tips & Warnings

  • The proper transmission fluid type for your truck is written on the transmission dipstick or the dipstick's handle. Mercon and Mercon V ATF fluids are not interchangeable. Use only the ATF fluid type indicated on your truck's transmission stick or costly transmission damage can result.
