Instructions

    • 1

Fill a bucket with water and add sand to the water with a shovel.

    • 2

Keep adding sand until you have a goopy mess of sand that just barely holds together when you take a handful and squeeze it.

    • 3

Make a large mound of sand using buckets of sand and water the same consistency as created in step 2. Make the mound larger than you want your final sculpture to be.

    • 4

Pat and pack the sand until it's roughly the size and shape you want your sculpture to be.

    • 5

Start at the top and work downward. You can use whatever tools you wish to create the turrets and walls of your sand castle. Popular tools include but are not limited to pastry knives, paint brushes, popsicle sticks and toothpicks. Work slowly because you cannot replace sand if you carve away too much.

    • 6

Step back and view your work often to see how the piece looks as a whole.

Tips & Warnings

  • Add shells, sea glass, sea rocks, seaweed or plastic figurines to finish your masterpiece.

  • Make sure you pack the sand firmly enough before you start sculpting and carving so that it won't collapse.
