How to Make Shapes from Codes in the Keyboard

If you have ever seen chat messages or online posts with symbols such as hearts, musical notes or any other shapes that are not on your keyboard, you may be wondering how people make them. You can make those same shapes with codes using your current keyboard. You will need to know the codes for each shape and how to enter them correctly. Try making some shapes with your word processing program to practice them for your next web post or chat.

  • Decide on which symbols you want to create. The Custom Computers Online website has a list of codes and symbols that you can create using your keyboard.

  • Find the code for the symbol you want to create on the Custom Computers Online list.

  • For keyboards with a numeric keypad, hold down your "alt" key and type the number code in with the number keys at the right of your keyboard. Let go of the "alt" key and the last number in the code at the same time and your symbol will appear.

  • Use the codes on your laptop or other compact keyboard that does not have a numeric keypad. To do this, hold down your "alt" and "fn" (function) keys at the same time and enter the numbers for the symbol code with the numbers on your keyboard letters and numbers. Do not use the number keys at the top; rather, use the extra set of numbers on the 7, 8, 9, U, I, O, J, K, L and M keys. Let go of the "alt" and "Fn" keys at the same time you are letting go of the last number in the symbol code.
