How to Make Cardboard Fairy Wings

Fairies are a staple in fantasy stories and folktales. Many children find the idea of small, winged pixies to be irresistible, making fairy costumes especially popular among young ones. Some adults wear fairy costumes to Halloween parties as well, showing that fairy mystique does not fade with age. The most important component of a proper fairy costume is a set of sparkly wings worn securely above the shoulder blades.

Things You'll Need

  • Large cardboard boxes
  • Marker
  • Hobby knife
  • Gold paint
  • Foam paint brush
  • Gold glitter
  • Gold ribbon
  • Break down the cardboard boxes until they can lie flat on the floor.

  • Draw a wing design on the cardboard with a marker and cut it out with a hobby knife. For symmetrical mirror-image wings, draw one wing, cut out the edge and fold the wing over to use as a template for the other wing. The wings should extend from the wearer's hips to shoulders.

  • Cut four small holes with a square pattern in the center of the wings. The holes should be at least 2 inches apart.

  • Cover both sides of the wings with gold paint using the foam paint brush. Depending on the type of paint used, this step may require several coats.

  • Sprinkle gold glitter on the wings before the paint completely dries. Allow the wings to dry for several hours.

  • Thread two loops of gold ribbon through the holes you created in the center of the wings. You may want to perform this step while the wearer holds the wings against the shoulder blades for a tight fit.

Tips & Warnings

  • A popular alternative to making cardboard wings is to stretch pantyhose over wire-hanger frames.
  • You will probably need to vacuum any golden "fairy dust" that the wearer leaves behind.
