How to Connect Wiring From a Light Socket to a Plug

Rewiring and restoring a lamp adds to both its usefulness and your personal safety. This is particularly true if you are replacing the lamp cord itself, the part that carries the electricity from the wall outlet to the socket. After you've connected one end of the wires to the socket interior, all that's left is adding a plug on the other end. Replacement plugs are very inexpensive and available at most hardware stores and home improvement retailers. The whole job will only take a few short minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Replacement lamp cord plug
  • Wire cutters
  • Trim the end of the lamp cord with the wire cutters. The object here is to make a clean straight cut.

  • Disassemble the replacement lamp cord plug. It consists of two pieces, an outer shell and an inner body where the prongs are located. The outer shell has a small slot where the cord will be inserted.

  • Slip the end of the lamp cord through the slot in the outer shell, and push the shell a few inches up the cord where it will be out of the way for now.

  • Retrieve the inner body of the plug. The prongs are hinged. Carefully spread them open as far as they will go. Each prong has a small, sharpened metal spur on it.

  • Insert the end of the lamp cord into the slot at the top of the inner body. Press the two prongs back down into place. This action forces the small metal spurs through the insulation on the lamp cord and allows them to make direct contact with the copper wires inside.

  • Slide the outer shell down over the inner body of the plug and press it in firmly until it is flush with the lower edge of the shell.

  • Screw in a fresh light bulb. Plug the new wire into any wall outlet and turn on the lamp.
