How to Cut Pipe Down the Center with a Vertical Band Saw

Many plumbers will use a band saw to cross-cut lengths of pipe. With a jig, a band saw can also be used to easily rip pipe down the center as well. This reusable jig consists of a V-shape (cut from a two-by-four) that cradles the pipe and holds it secure as the blade rips down the center of the pipe. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Band saw with fence
  • Metal cutting bandsaw blade
  • Table saw
  • Two-by-four board
  • 6-inch wide strip of 3/4-inch thick plywood
  • 1 1/2-inch wood screws

Instructions

    • 1

Set the bevel on your table saw blade to 30 degrees and rip the two-by-four down the middle.

    • 2

Position the two wedges on the strip of plywood so they form an open V. The two boards should be placed just wide enough that the pipe rests snugly in the V.

    • 3

Attach the two V-cut boards to the plywood with 1 1/2-inch wood screws.

    • 4

Position the band saw fence so that the V of the jig is centered on the band saw blade with the jig firmly against the fence.

    • 5

Place the pipe into the jig. Turn on the band saw and guide the jig through the blade, cutting the pipe cleanly down the center.

Tips & Warnings

  • For repeated cuts, make the jig 2 inches longer than the pipes being cut. Screw a strip of wood onto the lead edge of the jig to keep the two halves from separating.

  • When using power tools, always wear appropriate safety equipment, including safety glasses.
