Replace a Chevy S-10 Door

The Chevy S-10 is a versatile light pickup. However, it has been known to have its share of door problems. The hinge pins can rust or degrade, causing the door to sag and the metal to scrape against the frame near the hinge. To prevent rust and further damage to the truck body, the entire door should be replaced and reset. This will correct the problem right away.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the door. Place a chair with a pad (use a phone book, chair pad or door mat) under the door to support the door's weight while you work. The door bottom must rest right on the pad.

    • 2

Locate the hinge pin along the door frame and the retention spring at the bottom of the hinge. Pry away the spring with a small crowbar or prying device until it pops out of place.

    • 3

Tap out the hinge pins in each of the door's hinges using a hammer and a nail punch or similar tool. Remove both hinge pins and the old door. Pry out the bushings on the door hinge with the pry bar. Replace these before you install the new door.

    • 4

Set the new door on the hinges so the top of the hinges on the door line up with the top of the hinges on the door's frame. Have an assistant hold the door in place for you and position it on the chair for support.

    • 5

Slide the new hinge pins through holes on both hinges and tap them into position using the hammer. Apply a little bit of grease, if necessary, to lubricate the pins.
