How to Make Soy Chunk Candles
Soy candles offer an environmentally friendly alternative to paraffin candles. Since they are made from all natural materials, soy candle stubs are biodegradable and offer none of the chemical problems of their paraffin cousins. These candles also have a smoother texture than other kinds of candles.
Soy chunk candles are particularly popular. These candles consist of many colors of soy wax embedded in one background color. These candles are pretty, easy to make and make thoughtful gifts and pretty home decorations.

1
Break up several bars of soy wax into quarter-sized chunks, making sure to use several different complementary colors. Shades of one color or several colors like primary or pastel colors would look nice together. Use a rubber mallet to smash stubborn pieces.

2
Cut a piece of linen wick about four inches longer than your container is tall. For example, if your container is six inches tall, cut a piece of wick 10 inches long. Wrap one end of the wick around a pencil and lay the pencil across the jar’s mouth so the wick is centered and touches the jar’s bottom.

3
Pile the soy wax chunks into the jar around the wick. Do not pack them down; they should be loosely piled and as close to the sides of the jar as possible. Leave lots of air space between chunks while still piling them to the top of the jar.
-
4
Melt two or three bars of white soy wax in a double boiler on low heat. Stir it constantly to prevent burning. Once liquid, let it cool slightly. It should still flow easily, but be slightly white.
-
5
Pour the white wax into the glass jar over the wax chunks, moving the pot to distribute the white wax evenly. Some of the chunks will melt slightly; they will stay mostly whole and create a pretty effect. Let the candle harden overnight.
