How to Replace a Honda Accord Driver's Window Motor

The Honda Accord uses an electric motor to crank the window regulator, which moves the glass inside the door. When this motor wears out, it must be replaced by removing the door panel for access. The Accord door panel designs have changed slightly over the years, but removal has remained the same. The average weekend mechanic can replace the motor in the driver's side door of an Accord in about 30 minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the battery at its positive terminal by turning the bolt counterclockwise. Set the terminal away from the battery.

    • 2

Remove the power window switch assembly by prying it up with a screwdriver then tugging it out of the door panel opening. The assembly will be connected to the wiring harness with an adapter plug; pull the plug apart and remove the switch assembly from the work area.

    • 3

Remove the door panel by turning the interior door handle screws and arm rest bolts counterclockwise, then pulling at the panel to disengage the pop rivets that hold it in place. Starting at a corner, work the rivets loose around the panel one at a time. These plastic rivets are usually brittle, and some may need to be replaced. As each rivet comes free from the metal, the panel will loosen and eventually release. Carefully place it aside.

Remove the power window motor by disconnecting it from the wiring harness and turning its mount bolts counterclockwise. The motor will pull directly away from the window regulator gears and can now be replaced with a new unit. Take the opportunity to check the window regulator for damage, apply lubricant and remove debris from the inside of the door.

    • 5

Replace the motor by pressing it into the regulator gears and securing the mount bolts by turning them clockwise with a socket wrench. Press the wiring harness adapter plug together by hand. Replace the door panel by pressing it to the metal then securing each pop rivet by tapping it firmly. Replace the armrest bolts and door handle screws using the sockets and screwdrivers. Connect the adapter plug to the window switch assembly then press the assembly back into the door panel until it catches. Reconnect the battery and test the window.
