How to Get 64-Bit on a Computer

When referring to computer operating systems, the most common standards are 32-bit and 64-bit. These standards refer to the method by which the computer addresses system memory, with 64-bit systems allowing for the installation of additional memory as the computer has a larger number of potential addresses available. Upgrading your computer to a 64-bit system requires the installation of a 64-bit operating system, usually denoted by "x64" or similar wording.

Things You'll Need

• Windows 64-bit operating system installation disc
• USB drive

Instructions

1. Place the USB drive in your computer and save all of your valuable files and folders to the drive; they will be removed during the upgrade procedure.

2. Insert the installation disc into your computer and restart the machine.

3. Navigate through the screens until you reach the partition manager. Use the "D" key to erase existing partitions on your machine, then use the "C" key to create a single partition upon which the 64-bit system will be installed.

4. Select the NTFS format to prepare your hard drive to receive the 64-bit system. This will begin the automated installation process

5. Follow the remainder of the on-screen prompts (such as inputting the product key, date, and time) to complete the installation.
