How to Make Human-Hair Extensions

Both natural and synthetic hair extensions are available in a multitude of lengths and colors. Choosing the appropriate type for you depends on a variety of factors, including budget, whether you wish to color treat your hair and weather and maintenance considerations. Human-hair extensions are generally more expensive than synthetic, but can be expected to last longer. Unlike synthetic extensions, human hair can be styled and color treated, but may require more upkeep as it can be affected by weather. If you decide upon real human hair extensions, there is a simple process by which to make and attach them. Does this Spark an idea?

  • Human hair weft, bought in bulk
  • Weft clips that match your desired hair color

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a section of hair that matches the width of your weft clip. Sew weft root onto the front (the side with the bar across it) of the clip, and work across. Make sure the top of the hair weft lines up with the top of the clip, so that the clip cannot be seen.

    • 2

Lay hair on wax paper, spreading it out evenly. Mix up the hair dye according to the directions on the box. Apply using the tint brush evenly from the weft clip to the end of the hair, turning over to ensure dye has covered both sides. Rinse dye off after amount of time specified in the directions.

    • 3

Part hair horizontally across the lower back of the head, lining up with the top of the ears. Clip upper sections of hair, so they do not fall. Place hair weft clips evenly across the part, fastening into the existing hair at the root. Comb a layer of hair over top of the clips to blend in the extensions, then repeat with more extension clips if desired, combing down more layers to cover each layer of clips.

Tips & Warnings

  • Buying blond weft helps if you plan to dye the hair; otherwise, consider bleaching the weft before dying it.

  • Prolonged wearing of hair extensions weighs down the hair and may pull out or damage natural hair. Remove clips after each use if possible.
