How to Change a Light Bulb on a Kenmore Stove Top Exhaust Fan

Stove top exhaust fans not only keep your kitchen free of cooking odors and excessive heat but they also come with a light to help you see what you are cooking and to provide a night light for the area. Kenmore stove tops (or range hoods) come in a variety of models that can provide the lighting and ventilation you need. No matter what model you have, you need to know how to change the light bulb because it will burn out eventually. The process is easy and will take about 10 minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips head screwdriver (small)
  • Dish towel (if needed)
  • 75 watt appliance bulb (if needed)
  • 3-way 75 watt appliance bulb (if needed)
  • Turn the light switch to the off position. If the bulb was just illuminated, let it cool for 10 to 15 minutes before beginning this process.

  • Look under the stove top exhaust fan. You will see a screened part that covers the exhaust fan itself and (depending on your model) one or two lights covered by semi-transparent plastic. Find the four screws that are holding the clips in place to keep the light covers on the range hood. Loosen the screws with a small Phillips head screwdriver, but do not remove them. Once they are loose, place one hand in the center of the light cover (to support it) and, with the other hand, turn the clips away from the covers. Lower the panel out of place to expose the bulb inside.

  • Hold your hand near the bulb (but do not touch it) and feel whether it is cool enough for you to remove by hand. If you feel any heat coming off the bulb, wait for it to cool down or use a dish towel to grab the bulb. Remove the bulb gently. Some bulbs can be removed by turning them in a counter-clockwise direction (these bulbs will have a round receptacle at the end). Other bulbs have a receptacle that is more square in appearance and can be pulled out of place. Make sure you are grasping either type of bulb as close to the base as possible when you are removing it.

  • Install your new bulb by reversing these directions. Before you put the light cover back in place, test the bulb by turning it on. Kenmore range hoods use a 75 watt appliance bulb. These are small bulbs specifically labeled for appliances and available at lighting supply stores. Some Kenmore models need a 3-way bulb. These are bulbs (specifically marked on their packaging) that have three levels of lighting: nightlight, low and high. Make sure you have the right bulb for your model.

Tips & Warnings

  • Storie a spare bulb and a screwdriver in a convenient place that you will remember. This will make your work go faster.
  • If the bulbs in your range hood seem to burn out too quickly, have it inspected by a certified electrical repairman. You could have an electrical problem that could lead to a kitchen fire.
