How to Open a Magsafe Power Adapter

The Magsafe power adapter is a design that Apple, Inc. has used for their laptop computers since 2006. Rather than inserting a plug into a power connector on the laptop, the Magsafe adapter uses a magnet to keep the electrical leads from the cord in contact with the socket on the computer. This allows the cord to pull away without damage. The power adapters themselves come in 45W, 60W and 80W variants, and are constructed from thick white plastic. Opening them up for repairs or modification requires some care and the proper tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the adapter from the power outlet and allow it to cool for a few minutes.

    • 2

Remove the grounded wall cord or 2-prong wall plug connector from the adapter.

    • 3

Hold the adapter and cut along its seam, using the circular metal cutting tool; cut only on one side of the adapter.

    • 4

Flip the adapter over and cut along the seam on the opposite side.

    • 5

Pry the halves of the casing apart with the putty knife, cutting more if necessary. Be sure to keep track of the cord winding tabs, as they will fly off if you pry too vigorously. The adapter should now be opened.
