Shoebox
Hot glue gun
Elmer's glue
Paint or decorative paper, i.e. contact paper, wrapping paper, or construction paper
Scissors
Ruler
Masking tape
Dowel rod, 5 inches long
Dowel rod, 7 inches long
Empty spool of thread or empty pill bottle
Cardstock paper,or penny for backing of anchor shape
Markers or crayons
Yarn or string cut to desired size for fishing pole line and anchor rope
Making a boat out of a shoebox is a child-friendly craft. Adult assistance and supervision is necessary for younger children. Decorating with paint, markers or stickers is the highlight of the project for the children. The shoebox boat will be large enough for dolls or bears to be placed inside for imaginative play.
Step 1
Cut the end from one side of the shoebox.

Step 2
Bend the shoebox sides inward toward the base of the box, and cut into a pointy shape.
Step 3
Tape the bent and trimmed side panels to the inside of the box.
Step 4
Paint or cover the shoebox with decorative paper. Allow the paint to dry overnight before proceeding.
Step 5
Make seats for the boat by using old thread spools, or empty pill bottles. Hot glue the make-believe seats to the bottom of the boat. Paint or decorate the seats before attaching them to the boat bottom.
Step 6
Attach a piece of thread or string to the dowel rod with glue. Using hot glue, attach the "fishing pole" to the interior side of the shoebox boat.
Step 7
Draw an anchor onto a piece of card stock, or use construction paper and glue it to a penny. Attach the string to the "anchor" with hot glue.Attach the empty side of the string to the bottom interior of the boat with hot glue.
Step 8
Use hot glue to attach a dowel to the interior sidewall of the boat. Wrap a flag sticker around the top of the dowel, or draw a flag and on a piece of paper and glue it to the top of the dowel rod.
