Some curtain rods have rough surfaces that prevent curtain rings gliding along smoothly. You can solve this problem by using various household products. These simple items can coat the surface of a curtain rod so it is smooth enough for curtain rings to glide along easily.

Step 1

Take the curtain rings and curtain off the rod. Dip a soft cloth in soapy water then wring out the excess moisture. Wipe the rod with the cloth to remove dust. Apply one of the following smoothening products when the rod is dry.

Step 2

Use candle wax. Rub a candle down the curtain rod to coat it with wax.

Step 3

Try wax paper. Rub a sheet of wax paper down the length of the rod.

Step 4

Spray some furniture polish onto a soft cloth or a paper towel. Run the cloth or paper towel down the rod.

Step 5

Cut a piece of tape as long as the curtain rod. Stick the tape at the top of the rod where the rings will make contact.

Step 6

Apply soap. Rub a bar of soap on the rod.

Step 7

Use baby oil. Pour a small amount of baby oil onto a soft cloth and use it to rub the curtain rod.

Step 8

Replace the curtain rings and curtain after using one of the remedies listed. Pull the curtain across the pole to test the glide of the rings. They should glide smoothly on the rod but if not, remove the curtain rings and select a different remedy from the steps above.

Tip

Linda Neubauer provides the following tips on how to space curtain rings: Use more rings, spaced close together, for a neater look at the top of the curtain. Fewer rings, spaced evenly apart, will provide a softer look, and a minimal number of rings, spaced further apart, will give dramatic swoops.
