How to Change the Fuel Filter on a 3.0 Ford Ranger
Ford Motor Company recommends replacing your Ford Ranger's fuel filter every 15,000 miles. If you haven't replaced it within that span, you should do so as soon as possible. The filter traps sediment and other particle contaminants found in most gasoline, preventing the debris from reaching the fuel injectors and combustion chamber and ultimately damaging your truck. A plugged fuel filter can allow the contaminants to pass through, causing damage, or it can simply plug up completely and prevent fuel from getting past. Either case will cost you much more than the price of a new fuel filter.

1
Start the engine and pull the fuel pump fuse out of the fuse panel. The fuse panel is normally located under the dashboard, either on the driver's side or passenger's side, depending on the year of your Ranger. Refer to your Ranger's specific owner's manual for the fuel fuse location in the box. If you don't have your owner's manual, you can download one online. (Find a link in Resources.) Once the engine is started and the proper fuse is removed, wait for the engine to stall out and then shut the key off and reinstall the fuse.

Tips & Warnings
The fuel line clip can be removed with a pocket screwdriver. However, there is a strong possibility of breaking the clip this way. The clip can only be replaced by purchasing a whole new fuel line assembly, so keep that in mind if you opt to forgo purchasing the Ford fuel line removal tool.
Never smoke when working on a fuel system. Never perform fuel system repairs near open flames.
