Stick a feather in your hat.

According to the popular song, "Yankee Doodle went to town, riding on a pony. He stuck a feather in his hat and called it macaroni." While no one knows who Yankee Doodle was, making a wearable replica of his hat is a great activity to share with children. Easy to make and created from cheap materials, Yankee Doodle hats are a great idea for birthday parties or classroom craft projects.

Instructions

    • 1

Trim a section of newspaper 10 to 12 pages in length down until the newspaper measures 12" by 18." Lay the newspaper flat so the long edge runs left and right.

    • 2

Fold the right edge across to the left edge, creating a vertical crease in the center. Open the newspaper out again.

    • 3

Fold in the upper right and upper left corners to the center line and tape them in place. There will be a strip of unfolded paper along the bottom.

    • 4

Fold half of the sheets in this strip upwards so they rest above the recently-folded corners and fold the other half of the sheets on the other side of the newspaper. Tape these in place.

    • 5

Tape the feather near the top point of the hat. Cut the ribbon and make a bow out of it and tape this at the base of the feather.

    • 6

Open the hat by inserting your hand upwards from the bottom and gently pull apart the newspaper. Your hat is ready to wear.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make the hat bigger or smaller using different starting dimensions.

  • If there aren't enough pages of newspaper used, the hat may be too light and blow away in strong winds.
