How to Remove the Plugs From a Schlage Deadbolt
When you want to rekey your Schlage deadbolt lock, you will need to remove the plug. The plug is the cylinder portion of the deadbolt lock. You will need to purchase a plug follower to push the plug out of the deadbolt lock. Followers are tubes that “follow” the plug out of the deadbolt while keeping the other parts of the deadbolt from disengaging. Followers are available from locksmith dealers, home improvement centers and directly from Schlage. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need

1
Remove the two screws on the inside thumb lock of the Schlage deadbolt with a Phillips-head screwdriver. The screws secure the inside and outside portion of the deadbolt together to the door.
-
2
Pull the inside portion of the deadbolt away from the door. Open the door and pull the outside portion of the deadbolt away from the door. Place the outside portion of the deadbolt on a flat surface with the keyhole facing down.

3
Pull the flat tailpiece off the back of the deadbolt. The tailpiece hooks inside so you will need to pull the tip down and then pull the tailpiece out of the deadbolt.
-
4
Insert a small flathead screwdriver into the cap and press down on the cap pin. The cap is a circular piece that surrounds the key cylinder. There is a pin that unlocks the cap from the inside of the deadbolt near the bottom of the key cylinder.
-
5
Remove the cap, washer, spring and pin from the deadbolt. Set these parts in a safe place for installation later.
-
6
Pick up the deadbolt and insert the key into the keyhole. Hold the deadbolt cylinder in the upright position as it would be on the door. Turn the key clockwise until the key is in the 2 o’clock position.
-
7
Insert the plug follower over the back of the cylinder plug. There is a square notch on the follower that will line up with a notch on the cylinder. Slowly push the cylinder plug out of the deadbolt with the follower.
-
8
Support the outside of the plug where the key inserts so that the plug does not fall as you push it out of the deadbolt. Push the plug all the way out with the follower and leave the follower in the deadbolt.
