How to Convert Gigajoules of Natural Gas to Cubic Meters

Natural gas is commonly used in stoves, as well as other household applications.

Whenever you get a bill from the gas company, you may want to convert between units of natural gas. Gigajoules is actually not a direct measure of natural gas--instead, it measures the energy content of the natural gas. A cubic meter is a unit of volume, so it directly measures natural gas.

Instructions

1. Determine the number of British thermal units (BTU) per cubic foot of natural gas. If you are not given a value, you can use the standard value of 1,000 btu per cubic foot.

2. Multiply the number of gigajoules by 950,000. This is the equivalent number of BTU.

3. Divide the number of BTU (determined in Step 2) by the number of BTU per cubic foot (determined in Step 1). This gives you the number of cubic feet of natural gas.

4. Divide the number of cubic feet of natural gas by 35.3. This will give you the equivalent number of cubic meters of natural gas.
