Pendant lighting kits are available at almost any home improvement store. Using your imagination and one of these kits, you can turn almost anything into an unusual DIY pendant light. Objects that make interesting pendant lampshades include small waste baskets, mason jars, wire candle holders, or even a planter. One easy hanging pendant light projects utilizes a recycled coffee can.
Things You'll Need
- Power drill
- ½-inch metal drill bit
- Light bulb
- Protective eyewear
- Metal spray paint/primer (optional)
Remove the paper label from the outside of the can. Clean the empty coffee can with a damp cloth and soapy water. Allow it to air-dry completely.
Attach the drill bit to the drill and drill a hole in the center of the bottom of the coffee can. Wear your protective eyewear.
Paint the coffee can a color that coordinates with your décor (if you want), using metal spray paint. Allow the coffee can to dry.
Thread the pendant light cord through the hole in the coffee can.Turn off the electricity to the room you're installing the light in by the breaker. Install the kit into your ceiling, following the manufacturer's directions. Screw the light bulb in and then turn the power back on.
Tips & Warnings
- If you decide to paint your coffee can, use spray paint created specifically for metal. You want to use a metal-specific paint because it includes a primer that inhibits rust.
- If you want to place a pendant light in an area that does not already contain a ceiling light fixture, you can buy a paper lantern cord kit, but you will have to enlarge the hole you cut so that the plug can be threaded through the hole.
