How to Take the Rotors Off of a 2000 Honda

Removing warped or worn-out brake rotors isn't too complicated.

Your Honda motorcycle's brake rotors are built to withstand the extreme stresses placed upon them by high-performance riding. Unfortunately, these forces will eventually overwhelm the thin steel discs, requiring replacement to maintain the safety and performance expected from them. Be sure that you have a sturdy stand to lift the front of your bike off the ground. If you don't have access to such a stand, have the work performed by a properly equipped shop. The model discussed here is a 2000 Honda RC51, but the process is similar for other 2000 Hondas as well.

Things You'll Need

  • Hex socket set
  • Breaker bar
  • Socket wrench
  • 24 mm axle tool
  • Front stand or lift
  • Wooden blocks
  • Shop towels
  • Allen socket set

Instructions

    • 1

Loosen the front brake caliper mount bolts with a socket and breaker bar.

    • 2

Loosen the front axle pinch bolts on the bottom of the fork legs with a socket wrench.

    • 3

Loosen the front axle with an axle tool connected to the breaker bar.

    • 4

Lift the front end of the motorcycle off the ground, using a stand or lift.

    • 5

Remove the front brake calipers by unscrewing the caliper mount bolts completely. Slide the calipers off the brake rotors.

    • 6

Unscrew the axle completely, and pull it out from between the forks and front wheel.

    • 7

Roll the front wheel away from the motorcycle. Place it on a pair of wooden blocks covered with a shop towel to prevent scratching the wheel.

    • 8

Remove the brake rotor bolts, using an Allen head socket and the socket wrench. Pull the brake rotor off the front wheel. Flip the wheel over and repeat.

Tips & Warnings

  • Break the torque on the brake caliper bolts and the axle while the motorcycle is on the ground to provide additional leverage.

  • Build an inexpensive axle tool by using an appropriately sized bolt with a pair of corresponding nuts and lock washer.

  • To avoid warping the brake rotors, do not lay the front wheel directly on the floor or work surface.
