How to Remove the Agitator Hub in a GE Washer

How to Remove the Agitator Hub in a GE Washer thumbnail
A broken agitator can ruin laundry day.

GE is one of the best-known American appliance manufacturers. For over 100 years, they have been producing household appliances, including washing machines. These washing machines work by spinning laundry in a water-filled tub by means of a device called an agitator. This agitator is, in turn, connected to the agitator hub. Because the agitator hub is one of the hardest-working parts of a GE washer, it sometimes has to be removed so it can be replaced. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Socket wrench
  • Block of wood and hammer (if needed)

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug your washer from the electrical outlet. Open the hood to reveal the tub and agitator.

    • 2

Twist the agitator cap off in a counterclockwise direction. If that doesn't work, look for the thin line that marks where the agitator cap ends and the agitator begins. Press the edge of a flathead screwdriver against this line and gently pry off the cap.

    • 3

Remove the agitator bolt. In older models, use a socket wrench to remove the hex bolt that holds the agitator in place. On newer models, you will have to remove the dog ear holder before removing the agitator. Remove the plastic screw that holds the dog ears in by placing a large, flathead screwdriver into the square hole. Twist the dog ear holder off counterclockwise and lift out the dog ears.

    • 4

Place your hands beneath the agitator. Hold your head to the side and away from over the tub so you don't get an eyeful of agitator. Pull gently but firmly on the agitator. If it doesn't budge, hold a block of wood over it and tap with a hammer, or plug the washer back in and run a cycle on the hottest setting. When the water has cooled enough for you to put your hands in, try to remove the agitator.

Look in the bottom of the tub and you should now be able to see the bolts that hold the agitator hub in place. Remove these with a socket wrench. Lift out the agitator hub.

Tips & Warnings

  • A good pair of safety gloves can help you get a grip on stuck agitators.

  • The above steps are just guidelines. Talk with a GE technician if you are unsure about any steps of the process.
