How Do I Check My Yamaha Silverado's Motorcycle Oil?

Equipped with leather saddlebags and a large windshield, Yamaha's V-Star Silverado is ready for a long ride. Keeping the Silverado in good working order, however, requires a regular inspection of the motor's oil. If left unchecked, a lower oil level can reduce the 649cc motor's performance and even cause premature wear. Luckily, checking the oil level is made easier by using the motor's sight glass, a process that takes only a few minutes and can be done without tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Warm up the engine oil. Start the motor and let if run for five to ten minutes to allow the motor to reach its operating temperature. Once the motor is warm, stop the motor and turn off the ignition switch.

    • 2

Position yourself along the left side of the motorcycle and crouch slightly until you can see the motor's sight glass clearly. The sight glass is located just above the left-front foot peg.

    • 3

Lift the motorcycle upright to allow the sight glass to fill with oil. Take note of where the oil level is in relation to the indicator marks on the top and bottom of the sight glass. Ideally, your oil should be between both marks. If the oil level is closer to the lower mark, you motor has a lower oil level than required. An overfill is indicated by the oil level approaching the upper mark. Adjust the oil level as needed by adding or removing oil.

Tips & Warnings

  • Raise the oil level by slowly adding oil into the motor. Lower the oil level by sucking oil out of the motor's oil filler neck with a hand pump. For detailed information regarding your Yamaha Silverado's maximum oil capacity and recommended oil types, refer to your Owners Manual or a Yamaha Factory Service Manual.
