How to Embroider a Monogram

Embroidered initials personalize household items and fashion accessories. Extremely popular in the 1940s, monograms go back as far as ancient Egypt.

  • Alphabet Transfer
  • Embroidery Needles
  • Embroidery Scissors
  • Embroidery Threads
  • Embroidery Yarns
  • Clothes
  • Embroidery Floss
  • Embroidery Hoops
  • Fabrics
  • Linens
  • Needles
  • Threads
  1. Step 1

    Obtain an alphabet embroidery pattern from a craft store, book or magazine. Enlarge or reduce pattern to desired size. The middle initial should be either slightly larger or higher than the two on the outside.

  2. Step 2

    Transfer the pattern to the item to be monogrammed.

  3. Step 3

    Choose embroidery floss in a contrasting color that will be easy to see against the fabric.

  4. Step 4

    Fill in the letters by embroidering using a machine or by hand. A satin stitch is most commonly used, sometimes over a base of running stitches to make the letters stand out.
