How to Restore or Resurface Bathroom Countertops
A bathroom countertop generally does not receive a lot of abuse, but over a long period of time its color will fade and the surface will lose its luster. Laminate countertops are among the most popular in bathrooms. Laminate counter is basically thin sheets of hard plastic covering another surface. Restoring or resurfacing a laminate counter is not difficult, but as is the case with any painting project, the surface must first be properly prepared. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Sandpaper
- Sanding block
- Tape
- Enamel paint primer
- Paint roller
- Enamel paint
- Enamel paint sealant

Remove the existing polymer coating from the countertop with coarse sandpaper placed on a sanding block. Polymer is a coating that prevents paint from fading.

Place tape on the edges of areas that are not to be painted, such as the sink.

Roll on a coat of enamel paint primer with a paint roller. Allow the primer to dry for a day.

Roll on a coat of enamel oil-based paint that has a high gloss to your counter. Allow the coat of paint to dry.

Apply two or three more coats of paint, allowing the recommended drying time between each application.

Apply two coats of a clear enamel paint sealant to the countertop. Allow the counter to completely dry.

Tips & Warnings
Unless you are very careful, it's a good idea to place a tarp on the floor to collect any paint splatter. Some paints also come in a spray can. All of the priming and paint products are readily available at home improvement and paint stores.
Avoid using machine sanders. You may remove more of the surface than wanted.
