How to Troubleshoot a GM Windshield Wiper Circuit Board

The windshield wiper circuit board on your GM vehicle controls the function of the wiper motor. When this circuit board fails, your wipers will not operate correctly. Normally, replacing the wiper motor is the only way to correct this problem. Replacement wiper motors are available from most auto parts stores. However, before you replace your motor, you should troubleshoot the circuit board.

Instructions

1. Open the fuse panel cover under the steering column. To do this, turn the knobs on the fuse cover counterclockwise and pull down on the fuse cover.

2. Pull the fuse for the wiper motor using the fuse pullers in the fuse panel and check the fuse. The metal strip inside the fuse should not be broken. If it is, replace the fuse with a new fuse of the same amperage.

3. Open the hood and unscrew the three screws that hold the GM wiper motor casing in place.

4. Pull the casing off the motor assembly and visually inspect the wiper motor circuit board. If it is physically damaged (burned from an electrical short), replace the wiper motor.

5. Check the operation of the wiper motors. If all else fails, check the operation of the wiper motor. If the motor does not turn on at all, the wiper motor circuit board has failed.
