How Do I Change the Right Rear Tail Light on a 1988 Jeep Cherokee?
The 1988 Jeep Cherokee features a dual filament tail light that also acts as the brake light. The directional bulb and the reverse bulb in the tail light assembly are two other components. If you're replacing the tail light assembly or the bulbs in the assembly, you'll have to remove the complete component regardless. Direct-fit aftermarket assemblies are available online and are quite affordable. The replacement bulbs are available at almost all auto parts stores and are only a few dollars.
Things You'll Need
- Phillips screwdriver
- Replacement tail light
- 2057 replacement tail light/stop light
Instructions
-
-
1
Open the lift gate of the 1988 Jeep Cherokee.
-
2
Use the Phillips screwdriver to remove the two retaining screws located on the pillar of the lift gate.
-
-
3
Remove the upper and lower retaining screws of the tail light assembly. They are located on the outside of the tail light assembly housing and attached to the rear fenders of the Cherokee.
-
4
Pull the tail light assembly away from the rear fender of the Cherokee, but be careful since the three wire harnesses are still connected to the bulbs inside the assembly.
-
5
Remove the tail light wire harness and socket from the upper tail light and brake light dual filament bulb by turning it a quarter turn counterclockwise. If you're replacing the tail light assembly, remove the directional and the reverse harness and sockets in the same manner from the assembly.
-
6
Replace the bulb by gently pushing it inward inside the socket and then turning it a half turn to unlock the two retaining tabs attached to the base of the tail light/brake light.
-
7
Install the new bulb by reversing the procedure. If you're replacing the assembly and not the bulbs, insert the respective bulb sockets and harnesses back into the assembly and then reinstall it by reversing the procedure.

Tips & Warnings
If the retaining screws came out with a degree of difficulty, apply a light coat of anti-seize compound to the threads of the screws before replacing them.
