How to Convert Visual Basic 5.0 to Visual Basic 6.0

Computer programming has come a long way since the punch cards of the 1960s and 1970s. Development languages and methods change from year to year, and your programs could be left in the dust without the necessary upgrades. If you want to upgrade your Visual Basic, but you aren’t quite ready for the latest version, you can upgrade VB 5.0 files to VB 6.0 files with a few steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Download Visual Studio 6.0 from Microsoft's website (see Resources). Since there is no way to directly convert VB 5.0 to VB 6.0, you will do your conversion manually.

    • 2

Double-click on your downloaded EXE file to begin the install. If you have a Vista machine, unclick the check box next to "OLE/COM" object viewer in the Tools section of the installation setup. Installation may fail if the check box remains clicked.

    • 3

Use Visual Studio 6.0 to open one of your Visual Basic 5.0 files. All VB 5.0 files (and most VB 4.0 files) will work on Visual Studio 6.0. Save your file as a Visual Basic 6.0 file to complete the conversion. Do this for each of the files that you wish to convert to VB 6.0. This will allow you to use the tools of Visual Basic 6.0 with your VB 5.0 files.

Tips & Warnings

  • To run Visual Studio 6.0 on a Windows Vista machine, you must run the program as an Administrator.
