Recycling is an important step to protecting our environment, but it is also a great way to make inexpensive and distinctive projects. Creating your own insect out of recycled materials is easy to do and allows you to make truly unique crafts. Just as diverse as the different types of insects are the recycled materials you can use to make your crafts, including Popsicle sticks, foam egg cartons and coat hangers.

Step 2

Use a hot glue gun to glue one pipe cleaner to the Popsicle stick so that the end of the pipe cleaner is just shy of the end of the Popsicle stick. Only place glue in the very middle of the pipe cleaner.

Step 3

Separate a cone-shaped coffee filter at the seam so that it is opened.

Step 4

Use markers and paint to decorate the coffee filter into a butterfly wing pattern of your choice.

Step 5

Pinch the filter in the middle to make the butterfly's wings and place it on top of the glued portion of the pipe cleaner. Bend up the ends of the pipe cleaner to cover the coffee filter wings and twist the pipe cleaner together. The ends of the pipe cleaner will be the antennae.

Step 2

Bend the hanger part of the coat hanger to form an oval. Wrap the loose end of the oval with a piece of electrical tape to hold it in place.

Step 3

Pull an old knee-high stocking over top of the diamond shaped coat hanger so the open end of the stocking is on the end of the diamond where the oval you formed in step 2 is. Tie the open end of the stocking in a knot to hold it in place.

Step 4

Use construction paper, glue, glitter, newspaper and paint to decorate the stocking to create your own insect.
