Shoot a Lob Shot in Water Polo
Shoot a Lob Shot in Water Polo

Look like you're going to fire off a hard shot, and then lob a high arcing throw over the goalie's head.

From Quick Guide: Water Polo
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Water Polo Balls
  • Water polo balls
  1. Step 1

Hold the ball in a shooting position.

  2. Step 2

Pump-fake the goalie to draw him or her into position. The lob shot is only effective when the goalie is out of position to counter your position. Either the goalie is too far to one side to cut off your angle, or he or she is too far out and putting pressure on you.

  3. Step 3

Look ferocious, as if you're going to throw the hardest shot you ever threw.

  4. Step 4

Begin your shooting motion, but stop just before the release.

  5. Step 5

Use just your wrist and forearm to push the ball into a high arcing shot. The curve of the ball should be too high for the goalie to reach, but soft enough that it falls back down into the goal.

  6. Step 6

Chase after your shot. If the goalie is far enough out of position, you may be able to beat him to a missed shot.

Tips & Warnings
  • The lob shot is a finesse shot and requires a lot of practice to get your arc consistent.
  • Do not overuse the lob shot. Missed lobs look quite pathetic.
  • Make sure to throw the ball high enough that the goalie cannot eggbeater up and catch it. Goalies usually have the strongest eggbeater kicks in the pool.
  • If you have any condition that would impair or limit your ability to engage in physical activity, please consult a physician before attempting this activity. This information is not intended as a substitute for professional medical advice or treatment.
