How to Change a Starter in a Nissan Truck
The Nissan D21 Series pickup or early Nissan truck has been around for a long time. The starter on the D21 series truck is on the rear passenger side of the engine and can be changed quickly. A replacement starter for the D21 trucks can be purchased at most auto parts stores, Nissan dealerships and salvage yards if you want a used unit. Rebuilt starters are a substantially cheaper solution, and most carry a one-year warranty.

Remove the negative battery cable from the negative battery terminal with a wrench. Set the cable aside in a spot that will keep it from falling back against the battery.

Position a jack under the front end of your truck. Raise the front end of the truck off the ground using the jack. Support the truck with a set of jack stands either under the frame rails or the axle housing.

Locate and disconnect the electrical connector at the rear of the starter. Depress the locking tabs on the plug to release it from the starter.

Remove the two mounting bolts from the starter motor with a socket and ratchet. There are two bolts: one on top and one below the starter. Slide the starter out of the bell housing and lower it out of the truck.

Raise the new starter into the truck and slide it carefully into the opening in the bell housing. Install the upper and lower mounting bolts and tighten them until they are snug with a socket and ratchet. Torque the mounting bolts to 26 foot-pounds with a torque wrench and socket.
