Find the tie for you. Bolo ties come in many different styles, so choose one that fits your personality. Would you prefer a cord made of leather, suede or another fabric? What type of clasp works best for you? The clasp (also known as a slider) hangs beneath your neck and gives your tie a sense of individuality. It also comes in an endless array of designs, ranging from Native American craftwork to fiery skulls. What will your bolo tie say about you?

Find the right fit. According to Rocky Mountain Western, a company specializing in bolo ties, most people prefer cords between 36 and 38 inches long that hang approximately 3 inches below the breastbone. See if this length works for your body type, and make adjustments accordingly.

Choose the right outfit to complement your bolo tie. Now that you have selected your tie, figure out what you will wear in addition. People commonly wear bolo ties with a button-down shirt, buttoned to the very top. The cord tucks inside the collar like a regular tie, and the clasp rests in front, right against the neck. Bolo ties can also be worn with casual attire, but usually with the clasp hanging lower, below the neckline.

Tips & Warnings

  • Sample a few different sizes before buying your first bolo tie. A 38-inch tie might look good on your brother but terrible on you. You will not know for sure until you see for yourself.
