How to Remove Car Logos

Between auto manufacturers and dealers, any number of logos, badges and emblems can end up on a car. If you'd rather not provide free advertising for these companies--or if you just find the logos to be unsightly--there is a relatively easy process you can follow to remove them from your car, truck or van. This will work for any logos attached via common adhesive backing, including double-sided foam.

Things You'll Need

  • Dental floss or fishing line
  • Hairdryer
  • Leather work gloves
  • Polishing cloth
  • WD-40

Instructions

    • 1

Make sure that the logo isn't bolted to the car. If it is, you can likely unscrew it and remove it without performing any additional steps.

    • 2

Wash the area of the vehicle where the soon-to-be-removed logo appears. This reduces the risk of paint scratches during the removal process.

    • 3

Turn a hairdryer on "medium" or "low" and point it directly at the logo to soften the adhesive. Keep the hairdryer approximately 12 inches away from the vehicle to avoid damaging the paint. Check periodically to see if the logo can be turned slightly, which is an indication that it's ready for removal.

    • 4

Use the dental floss or fishing line to slowly saw through the softened adhesive. Move the line back and forth, pulling it away from the vehicle to avoid damaging the paint. Continue this until the bond is broken and the logo comes off the car.

    • 5

Apply some WD-40 to a polishing cloth and rub off any adhesive residue left behind, restoring your car's finish to its natural state.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the adhesive hardens up before you're done removing the logo, try heating it up again.

  • If you're using dental floss rather than fishing line, note that it might break while you're using it. This is not an indication that you're doing something wrong. Simply get another length of floss and continue.

  • The fishing line or dental floss can cut your hand while you're moving it back and forth, so be sure to wear gloves throughout this part of the process.
