How to Make a Mini Kite

A mini kite is a great project for those with minimal time and materials. Mini kites can demonstrate air currents and lift just as well as big kites, making them the perfect choice for a mini science lesson. Just make sure to keep your materials lightweight and attach your string on tight so you don't lose the kite to the first big gust of wind.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay a piece of tissue paper flat on the table.

    • 2

Trace a diamond shape approximately 4 inches long and 3 inches wide.

    • 3

Cut out the diamond shape using your scissors.

    • 4

Cut the two plastic drinking straws into 3 and 4 inch lengths.

    • 5

Glue the 3 inch straw horizontally across the two points on the sides of the diamond. Glue the longer straw lengthwise down the center.

    • 6

Trace a small triangle approximately 2 inches long and 1 inch high on the tissue paper.

    • 7

Cut it out and fold it in along the base about 1 centimeter.

    • 8

Glue the triangle to your diamond along this flap. Glue it in the center on the bottom side of the kite (the side without the straws).

    • 9

Cut a length of thread at least 1 foot long to use as the string of your kite.

    • 10

Glue the thread onto the point of the small triangle.

    • 11

Cut a few long skinny pieces of tissue paper for kite tails. Glue these onto the end of your kite.

    • 12

Decorate your kite with glitter or stickers, but make sure not to weigh it down too much.

Tips & Warnings

  • Fly the kite indoors by walking.

  • Store the kite carefully to prevent folds that will ruin the ability of the kite to fly.
