How to a Save BMP as an ICO

The ICO format is a Windows icon format that is commonly used for website favicons. A favicon is the small icon that you may see in your web address bar or browser tab, such as the red "Y!" icon for Yahoo! If you are working on a website and want to create your own favicon from a BMP image file, you can easily do so. There are free programs, such as IrfanView, that can save as ICO as well as premium programs, such as Adobe Photoshop or Fireworks.

Instructions

1. Choose a graphics program to open your BMP file in. If you have Windows, you can open it in the free Microsoft Paint or using the IrfanView freeware. Adobe Photoshop and Fireworks are premium graphics programs that open BMP files.

2. Launch your graphics program of choice, such as IrfanView.

3. Open the "File" menu and select "Open" from the options. Navigate to the BMP file on your computer and open it.

4. Make any necessary changes to your BMP file before you save it as an ICO file.

5. Click open the "File" menu and select "Save As." In the "Save As" dialog box, choose ICO from the menu by "File Type" and make any necessary changes to the output location and file name before clicking "Save." This will save the BMP file as an ICO file to the destination that you selected.
