How to Replace the Door Spring on a Whirlpool Dishwasher

Save

Dishwashers by Whirlpool use a pair of springs that connect the door to the body. These springs are designed to provide balanced tension so that the door does not fall open or snap shut. Over time, these springs can either weaken or break, in which case the dishwasher door can fall open if unsupported or fail to close properly. If your Whirlpool dishwasher's door begins to open or close abnormally, a simple spring replacement can make it like new.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Pliers
  • Replacement springs for your specific Whirlpool dishwasher
  • Unplug the dishwasher or shut off power at the circuit breaker. If possible, shut off water to the dishwasher.

  • Unscrew the mounting screws at the top of the dishwasher. These screws secure the dishwasher to the underside of the counter. (Some dishwashers may not be secured.)

  • Pull the dishwasher forward from underneath the counter until the notched attachment points for the door springs can be seen on either side of the dishwasher.

  • Remove the spring hooks from both the door attachment point and the notched attachment point. If the spring is broken, this should be simple to do by hand. If not, use pliers to securely grip and remove the spring end from the adjustment notch, then remove the other end from the door. If replacing both sides, repeat on the other side.

  • Hook one end of the replacement spring into the door attachment point. Using pliers, hook the other end of the replacement spring into the same notch that was previously used. If replacing both sides, repeat on the other side.

  • Test the door to see if it opens and closes as desired. If the door closes with too much force, unhook the spring from the current notch and hook it onto the next notch toward the front of the dishwasher. If the door falls open too easily, move the spring end one notch toward the back of the dishwasher. Repeat as necessary until the door opens and closes as desired.

  • Push the dishwasher back into position underneath the counter. Reinstall the mounting screws at the top of the dishwasher. Make sure that the door still has proper clearance and alignment before reinstalling the screws.

  • Plug in the dishwasher or reset the circuit breaker and turn on the water if it was shut off.

Tips & Warnings

  • The springs on either side of the Whirlpool dishwasher should be clipped into the same attachment points so that spring tension is balanced side to side.
  • You should not need to pull the dishwasher out completely but if you encounter resistance, make sure that you have not snagged any hoses or cords before continuing.
